I feel like this really rings true for me as I am the mother of four — now fully-grown — kids and the nana to their six precious littles. When I was still a young momma, somedays I would just get lost in the mundane. The laundry was piled up and there were all the diapers to change, sticky little fingers to clean, and a pile of books to put away.
I imagine this — or something like it — is the reality of your daily life, and tomorrow, just like I did, you will do it all again. As a mother, I know just how hard it can be to slow down and notice the beauty of each stage of your life and it's hard when you're in the day-to-day to really notice how fast things are changing.
This is me and my gang of hooligans!
c.s. lewis once wrote: "Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different?"
But now whenever I stop and look back. I'm always amazed at how quickly my little ones grew up. In the blink of an eye, my little baby boy who slept in my arms while the other was building towers out of Legos and getting ready for his first season of T-ball. Now they have now graduated college and own their own homes.
Weren’t my little girls just learning how to sit up and playing with their baby dolls or Play-Doh? Now they are both themselves mothers. Sometimes, it feels like I just held my babies for the first time and yet here they all are beautiful grown-ups and raising families of their own. It’s in these times of looking back when I remind myself that those moments couldn’t have lasted forever.
Even when remember I how exhausted and worn out I was and the day-to-day seemed to never change, I am reminded of just how lucky I am to be the mother to those adored humans and to now know that all those daily and seemingly mundane moments are exactly the moments that I want to remember now.
When I look now at the photos I had made back then, I remember the way that my babies looked up at me and smiled like my face was the most exciting thing they’d ever seen. I want to remember the way my little girl tucked her little head into the nook of my neck and played with my hair while we rocked. I want to remember the way my kids snuggled into my lap while we read their favorite books — the snuggles, the books, the baby dolls, the cars, the Play-Doh, the painting, the adventures, the games, tickles and belly laughs, and of course all the dance parties. These are the things that I want to remember. It's our story! It was messy. It was chaotic. It wasn’t perfect — but was beautiful because it was ours.
